12 books to transform your life
26th November 2009
I've read at least 200 self-improvement books. Amongst the mediocre and the ineffective, these 12 have all had a profound effect on my life.
Choices for each section are in recommended reading order.
Get stuff done
-
7 Habits of Highly Effective People
If you only read one book in your life, make it this one. Covey masterfully fuses the most important self improvement concepts from human history into a single, coherent philosophy. I still return to this for inspiration every year. -
Awaken the Giant Within
Probably the most complete book for transforming every part of your life for the better, written by the modern master of this art. Anthony may be the most persuasive and effective life coach of our time. -
The Speed of Trust
This book focuses on a single concept: trust. Don't be fooled - by the end, you'll realise how life encompassing this truly is. More than anything, this book can help you work better with others.
Make money
-
Rich Dad, Poor Dad
This book is the financial education that every child should receive. The author was raised by two 'dads' - one rich, one poor - and this book tells the lessons he learned from each. I don't want to spoil the end, but the author does quite well for himself. -
How to Get Rich
Featuring probably the best inner jacket of any book: photographs of his tax cheques ("Pay Inland Revenue £7,863,536"). Felix doesn't tread softly here: riches are not easy to win, and chances are, you're not cut out for it. Fascinating, brutal honesty. -
Think and Grow Rich
The original wealth creational manual - written in 1937 - goes to show how the right fundamentals are as effective as they are timeless.
Understand people
-
How the Mind Works
An excellent, accessible primer for evolutionary psychology. After reading this, human behaviour is a lot less confusing, if no less fascinating. -
What Every Body is Saying
The best guide I've found to reading body language, superbly illustrated. You'll see the world in a whole new light. -
The Mating Mind
Sexual selection - or 'Darwin's other theory' - explained. Learn why we tell jokes, compose sonatas and follow fashion among others.
Build a business
-
The E-myth Revisited
If you run a small business, this is the first book you should read. You'll be astounded to read about all your mistakes and frustrations from a complete stranger who seems to know your life so well. Best of all, he knows what to do about them. -
Good to Great
Honestly, you should read everything by Jim Collins. But if you had to pick just one, this is it: a comprehensive and engaging guide on what sets the great companies apart from the also-rans. -
Losing My Virginity
The autobiography of Richard Branson, self-made billionaire, who happens to be riotously entertaining and inspirational. Not remotely an 'advisory' book, this is infinitely more compelling for it.
A great book has probably the greatest return on your time and money known to man. Do yourself a favour and invest in them wisely.
